Week 31: Crystal Palace dent Man City’s title hopes, Arsenal thrash Liverpool

Man City fell to fourth in the Premier League and nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea as the champions title hopes now look a distant dream after Manuel Pellegrini’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Glenn Murray put the Eagles ahead on 38 minutes with a tap in for his fifth goal in five games, before Palace doubled their lead just after half-time when Jason Puncheon fired home a free-kick from just outside the box.

Yaya Toure got City back into it on 78 minutes but the champions could not find an equaliser as Palace held on for their third straight victory to move up to 11th and they gun for a top ten finish.

It was also not a good weekend for Liverpool as three goals in eight minutes proved to be their downfall as Arsenal cruised past the Reds 4-1 denting Liverpool’s Champions League prospects.

Hector Bellerin scored the opener on 37 minutes, before Mesut Ozil’s stunning 25-yard free-kick just three minutes later and in injury time Alexis Sanchez made it three to put the game beyond Liverpool’s reach.

Jordan Henderson got one back from the spot-kick but after Liverpool were reduced to ten men as Emre Can saw red, Olivier Giroud restored the Gunners three goal advantage as the Gunners rise above Man City into second.

Chelsea sit seven points clear of their London rivals with a game in hand as Loic Remy netted the winner in a 2-1 win over Stoke, but the game will be remembered for Charlie Adam’s 65 yard strike from inside his own half.

Man United strengthened their grip on a Champions League spot as Ander Herrera scored twice as Man United eased past Aston Villa 3-1, but a top four finish looks difficult for Tottenham now after they were held to a scoreless draw by Burnley.

Elsewhere, there were some big wins down the bottom as Leicester and QPR boosted their hopes of survival, while Jermain Defoe hit a stunning winner as Sunderland eased their relegation fears with a 1-0 win over Newcastle
