Week 38: Newcastle bag crucial win as Hull relegated, Stoke hit six past Liverpool

Newcastle bagged a first league win in 11 games as they secured a 2-0 win over West Ham to secure safety in the top-flight as they condemned Steve Bruce’s Hull to the Championship.

Moussa Sissoko’s header on 54 minutes sent the Magpies on their way and Jonas Gutierrez eased fears of any late drama as the Argentine – who only returned to action back in March after a battle with cancer – grabbed a late second to help Newcastle avoid the drop.

That win for Newcastle meant Hull could do nothing to save themselves as Hull were held to a 0-0 draw by ten-man Man United. Hull did have their chances and also failed to take advantage of the extra man when Marouane Fellaini saw red for United as their two-year stay in the top-flight came to an end.

Already relegated QPR crashed to a 5-1 defeat at Leicester, while Burnley ended their campaign on a high despite relegation as Danny Ings scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Aston Villa.

Champions Chelsea came from behind to beat Sunderland 3-1 with Loic Remy on the double, but Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool farewell did not go to plan as despite Gerrard scoring, the Reds fell to Stoke 6-1 as Mark Hughes’ side recorded their biggest ever league win.

That result allowed Tottenham to leapfrog Liverpool into fifth and secure Europa League football  next season as Harry Kane scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Everton.

With losses for both Everton and West Ham, Crystal Palace rose above both sides as Marouane Chamakh netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Swansea as the Eagles secured a top ten finish.

Elsewhere, Theo Walcott hit a hat-trick as Arsenal eased past West Brom 4-1, while Sergio Aguero scored his 26th goal of the season and took the Golden Boot award as Man City beat Southampton 2-0.
