Stan Wawrinka knocked out fellow Swiss man Roger Federer at the French Open as the ninth seed booked his spot in his first semi-final at Roland Garros with a 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7/4) victory over the 17-time grandslam champion.
Wawrinka will now face Frenchman Jo-Wilfired Tsonga in the semi-finals after the Frenchman saw of the threat of fifth seed Kei Nishikori in a five set thriller as Tsonga denied the Japan man a superb comeback to reach the final four with a 6-1 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3 victory.
Play was suspended for 35 minutes during second set of the Tsonga vs Nishikori after a large metal panel fell down on Court Philippe Chatrier, injuring three spectators.
In women’s action, 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic booked her spot in the final four after the Serbian cruised past Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in a straight sets 6-3 6-2 win.
The other of today’s quarter-finals saw Lucie Safarova bag a 7-6 (7/3) 6-3 straight sets win over Spain’s Garbine Muguruza as the Czech woman set up a semi-final clash with Ivanovic.
