The Week in Sport (22-28 Jun)

Time for another round-up of the week that was on Balls and Brawls and this week’s highlights include all the latest from the Copa America, while the UFC 189 clash between McGregor and Aldo was thrown into doubt.

Football

Argentina needed a penalty shoot-out to book their place in the Copa America semi final’s after a 5-4 shoot-out win over Colombia, but Brazil are out after Dunga’s side fell to Paraguay 4-3 in a shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.

Hosts Chile booked their spot in the semi-finals after a late 1-0 win over holders Uruguay, while a Paolo Guerrero hat-trick sent Peru into the final four after a 3-1 win over Bolivia.

In transfer news, Liverpool bagged Roberto Firmino in a £29m deal for the Brazilian, while West Ham forked out over £10m for Marseille winger Dimitri Payet. More transfer deals here.

Around Europe, Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic completed a £13.6m move to Serie A champions Juventus as Carlos Tevez departed the Italian side to return to Argentina with Boca Juniors.

Tennis

Wimbledon kicks-off on Monday but Spaniard David Ferrer has pulled out of the grandslam due to an elbow injury.You will be able to follow daily recaps from all the action at Wimbledon on this blog.

European Games

Ireland’s boxers celebrated two gold medals at the European Games in Baku with Katie Taylor and Michael O’Reilly both taking home the gold medal.

Taylor won her lightweight final with a unanimous decision win over France’s Estelle Mossely to claim an 18th major international title, while Laois man O’Reilly also won on a unanimous decision against Azerbaijan’s Xaybula Musalov to take the middleweight crown.

Brendan Irvine had to settle for a silver medal after defeat to Russia’s Bator Sagaluev in the light-flyweight final on Thursday, while Sean McComb took home a bronze medal after a semi-final defeat to Azerbaijan’s Albert Selimov in the lightweight division.

Golf

Bubba Watson claimed a hard-fought play-off victory over Paul Casey to win the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
