Man United have wrapped up the signings of Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, for a combined fee of around £40m for the midfield duo.
German midfielder Schweinsteiger leaves Bayern Munich after 17 years at the club and will once again link up with Louis van Gaal, after signing a three-year deal with the Red Devils.
The 30-year-old made his senior debut for the Bundesliga side in 2002 and 2002 and won over 20 major honours during his time there, including eight Bundesliga medals.
The German midfielder – who joins for a reported fee of £14.4m – told manutd.com that he would not have left Bayern Munich for any other club and looks forward to the new chapter in his career.
“Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for,” said the 2014 World Cup winner.
“I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again.
“I will never forget my time at Bayern Munich and I would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for the great memories.”
Man United also wrapped up a £25m deal for Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneidlerlin, who has signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old signed for the Saints in 2008 from French side Strasbourg and made and 253 appearances for the club in helping them back up from League One to the Premier League.
Morgan Schneiderlin told the club’s website that it was an easy decision to join Man United and looks forward to playing for the biggest club in the world.
“Once I learned that United were interested in signing me, it was a very easy decision to make,” said the French midfielder.
I have enjoyed seven very happy years with Southampton and it’s a club that will always be in my heart. But the chance to be part of this squad to help this great club be successful was too good to miss.
“I’m excited to be starting that journey on our trip to the USA. I know what Manchester United means to fans all over the world and I’m looking forward to experiencing that.”
Both men will join fellow new signings Matteo Darmian and Memphis Depay on the plane for Man United’s pre-season tour of the USA, which starts with a friendly against Mexican side Club America on Friday
I am delighted United are finally adding some new faces to the squad after the rant I had on Friday. Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin will add depth to United’s midfield but now focus must turn in signing a much needed strong and confident centre-back.
Schweinsteiger brings years of experience with him and I can really see him inspiring the younger squad members to up thier game, while I look forward to see if Schneiderlin will be able to make the leap from Southampton to a much bigger club.
