Man City have made their third major summer signing after completing a deal to bring Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi to the Eithad on a five-year contract.
The 27-year-old joins for an initial fee of £28.5m, which will rise to £32m and he joins English duo Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph in joining the club this summer.
Otamendi only signed for Valencia last summer from Portuguese side Porto and made 77 appearances for a club in a season which saw him named in the La Liga team of the season.
In a statement on the club’s website mcfc.com, Otamendi said he is delighted to have joined Man City and hopes to win plenty of silverware with the early Premier League leaders.
“To be here inside a club that looks so wonderful from the outside is a dream,” said the 27-year-old.
“I am here to give my best, to fight game by game and push City to the highest peaks for as long as possible, and I wish we will be able to win several cups and titles.”
Otamendi was also rumoured for a move to Manchester United after the Argentine made it his desire to leave the La Liga after just one season, but that appeared to be just rumours and Man City swooped in to sign the defender.
He will wear the No. 30 jersey for Man City and manager Manuel Pellegrini has no doubt that his fellow Argentine will be a success in the Premier League.
“I am sure he will become another Argentine player our fans will enjoy watching,” said the 61-year-old.
“Nicolas Otamendi was arguably the best defender in La Liga last season and so naturally I’m delighted to have added a player of his quality.
“Nicolas has all of the qualities to be a success in the Premier League – he’s strong, he’s excellent in the tackle and he’s very good technically.
Otamendi joins fellow Argentine internationals Sergio Aguero, Paolo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis at Man City and it is expected that the centre back will feature in the preferred starting XI alongside captain Vincent Kompany.
As a United fan, I wished Louis van Gaal had moved for Otamendi as I believe he will be a resounding success at Man City. City needed someone to strengthen up that City defence and give Vincent Kompany strong support and he fits that bill perfectly.
However, despite a horrendous debut campaign for Eliaquim Mangala , the Frenchman has started well this season and will want to continue his good form and give Otamendi a good fight for his place in the team.
This signing could be the difference maker in the race for the title this season and I hope Man United don’t regret making a move for him.
