US Open Day 7: Frustrated Djokovic battles into last eight, Serena Williams sets up Venus clash

Top seed Novak Djokovic overcame frustration in his last 16 clash with Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut on day seven at the US Open as the Serbian managed to keep his composure to battle through to the quarter-finals with a four set victory.

The Wimbledon champion snapped a racket and stamp furiously as he lost a set for the first time at this year’s tournament but the Serbian refused to let his frustration get the better of him as he roared back to clinch a 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 win over a tough challenge from the Bautista Agut.

He will now face 19th seed Feliciano Lopez in the quarter-finals with the Spaniard ousting Rafael Nadal’s conqueror Fabio Fognini out of the competition with a 6-3 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 straight sets win over the Italian.

Defending champion Marin Cilic had to dig deep to keep hopes of a second straight US Open title alive, after Frenchman Jeremy Chardy gave the Cilic a tough challenge with the Croatian earning a 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 win to reach the quarter-finals.

Cilic will now play Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the last eight, as the 19th seed saw off fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-4 as he reached the US Open quarter-finals for just the second time.

World number one Serena Williams hopes of a calendar grand slam edged even closer after the American saw off compatriot Madison Keys with ease to set up a quarter-final clash against sister Venus.

20-year-old Madison Keys is being touted as America’s next big tennis star but the veteran Williams had too much power for the youngster to deal with, as 33-year-old Williams bagged a 6-3 6-3 victory to advance.
