World number one Novak Djokovic made light work of seventh seed Tomas Berdych on day 12 of the action at Roland Garros, as the Serbian cruised into a sixth successive semi-final at the French Open.
It wasn’t all easy for the 11 time grand slam champion as frustration got to him as Berdych broke in the opening game of the third set but Djokovic managed to keep his composure and reach the semi-finals with a 6-3 7-5 6-3 straight sets win.
13th seed Dominic Thiem will be hoping to pull off a shock against Djokovic in the final four, as the aspiring Austrian came from behind to reach a first grand slam semi-final with a hard-fought win over Belgian David Goffin.
Only Djokovic has won more matches this year than the 22-year-old Austrian and he came from behind in both the second and third set as Goffin’s challenge faded in the fourth set to allow Thiem score a 4-6 7-6 (9/7) 6-4 6-1 victory.
In women’s action, Serena Williams survived a major scare against 60th seed Yulia Putintseva to reach the semi-finals and move to within two wins of equalling Steffi Graf’s Open era record of 22 grand slam singles titles.
Many expected the American to overcome the Kazakh will ease but the defending champion had to come from behind to defeat the spirited Putintseva with 5-7 6-4 6-1 victory.
Williams will face Kiki Bertens in the semi-final after the Dutch woman pulled off another shock and she continued her dream run at Roland Garros with victory over eighth seed Timea Bacsinszky.
Bertens knocked out Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber in the first round but will now face a tough challenge against Williams in the final four, after securing another shock 7-5 6-2 win over Swiss Bacsinszky.
Tomorrow’s action will see Serena Williams compete for the third day running at Roland Garros against Kiki Bertens in the semi-finals, while Garbine Muguruza hopes to reach a second grand slam final when the Spaniard faces Aussie Sam Stousr.
The men’s semi-finals will also take place on Friday as world number one Novak Djokovic goes head-to-head with Austrian Dominic Thiem, while defending champion Stan Wawrinka faces second seed Andy Murray.
