Euro 2016 Day 1: Romania look to cause upset against hosts France

Euro 2016 is finally here and tonight it is hosts France that get us underway as they host Romania with Anghel Iordanescu’s looking to cause a major upset on the very first day of the competition.

France are one of the favourites to win the tournament on home soil and while it will be a big occasion in Paris the French team will need to keep their heads down and treat this like any other game.

Romania will be looking to catch France off guard tonight and cause the first of many a shock at Euro 2016 as the Tricolours look to spoil the party in Paris.

It is a big night for the hosts and France manager Didier Deschamps hopes his players don’t may too much attention to the occasion and insists the must be wary of a Romanian upset.

“The less the occasion weighs on the players, the better,” said the 1998 World Cup winner.

“The Romanian team we’re up against will not roll over and they will give their best to achieve a good result. If they want to win this match, they can’t just defend. I am expecting them to come with the intention of upsetting us, so it will be an interesting battle over the 90 minutes.”

Romania gaffer Anghel Iordanescu knows his team are up against it in the opening game of Euro 2016 and believes there is enough about him team up make it out of group A.

“We are up against one of the best teams in the tournament”, said the 66-year-old.

“I hope and believe our players will do their best to show everybody that we have a good team, a worthy team capable of putting in a good performance. The objective is to qualify, to get through the group, and make a very good impression at the same time.”

Team News

France manager Didier Deschamps only concern for the host nation is that of Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman, who is struggling a calf injury.

Romania defender Vlad Chiriches has declared himself 100% to feature in Romania’s opening game after he sat out their warm-up victory over Georgia.

Striker Florin Andone is expected to start after the Cordoba striker overcame a hand injury, while midfielder Ovidiu Hoban is also fit after picking up a slight knock in training.
