Sunderland appoint former Man Utd boss David Moyes as new gaffer

Less than 24 hours after Sam Allardyce left the club to take the reins at England, Sunderland have unveiled former Man United boss David Moyes as their new manager.

The 53-year-old returns to the Premier League for the first time since a disastrous ten month spell as Man United manager and has signed a four-year deal to succeed new England manager Sam Allardyce.

In a statement on the club’s website, David Moyes is delighted to return to the Premier League as he hopes to pick up where former boss Allardyce left off.

“I look forward to continuing the good work done by Sam,” said the Scot.

“I am delighted to have joined Sunderland. I am relishing the challenge and excited by the opportunity. I have taken over a big British club with a great support and I’m looking forward to working in the Premier League again.”

Moyes started his managerial career at Preston before joining Everton in March 2002 and he would spend 11 seasons at Goodison Park, picking up three LMA Manger of the Year awards in the process.

Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Moyes headed to Man United but his tenure would last just ten months with the club finishing seventh in the league.

In late 2014, he moved to Spain where he took charge of Real Sociedad and despite just lasting a year with the La Liga side, he did own a 1-0 win over Barcelona.

Moyes will have just three weeks to prepare at Sunderland before his first Premier League game, which will be a difficult away trip to Pep Guardiola’s Man City on 14 August.

My Opinion

I am sure Sunderland were gutted to lose Sam Allardyce as their manager but I think David Moyes is a great choice of manager for the Black Cats, despite his woes at Man United.

Moyes struggled at the Red Devils and was ultimately sacked leaving them in seventh place in the Premier League and it didn’t go too much better for in him Spain, lasting just 12 months at Real Sociedad.

I think Moyes is more suited to a club like Sunderland and he should return to his best like he did at Everton. However, the Scot will need to beef up his squad for the Black Cats to avoid another relegation battle.

Moyes will be out to redeem himself after the Man United disaster and I think he is a great choice. It could be another long season for Sunderland but Moyes has the experience to help them to Premier League safety.
