The Rio Olympics on Balls and Brawls

The day has arrived than thousands of athletes from across the globe have been waiting for as the 31st Olympic games kicks off in Rio de Janeiro with tonight’s opening ceremony.

Some of the action has already begun in Brazil but the games officially get underway tonight with the opening ceremony in front of over 78,000 at the Maracana Stadium.

It will be an amazing night in Brazil as they showcase their culture on the world stage, as well as the formal introduction of all competing countries and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

After a night of glamour and entertainment, the action will get underway on Saturday with swimming, cycling, rowing, gymnastics just a few that will feature on day one of the Rio Olympics.

It will be an action packed two weeks in Brazil and I aim to bring you a daily recap of all the major action in a day-by-day recap featuring on the latest medal winners and key winners.

I will also be keeping a close eye on the Irish competitors in Rio and you can expect a recap of how the likes of Katie Taylor, Kieran Behan, Nicholas Roche and Padraig Harrington just to name a few are getting on in Rio.

So over the next two weeks, look out for my daily recaps of the Rio Olympics which will include the latest medal winners, how Team Ireland are performing and the best of the rest.

It is going to be an exciting two weeks in Rio and I hope Team Ireland pick up a few medals along the way in what should be another exiting Olympic Games.

It is going to be a late night for Irish viewers with coverage of the Opening Ceremony starting at 11:30pm on RTÉ TWO, while BBC ONE’s coverage begins at 11:40pm
