Week 1: Hull stun champions Leicester, Liverpool edge out Arsenal in seven goal thriller

The new Premier League season kicked-off and we already had our first shock of the season as managerless Hull stunned champions Leicester in a 2-1 win for the Tigers.

Hull took the lead just before half-time as Abel Hernandez and Adama Diomande both went an acrobatic strike with Diomande beating his teammate to the ball to send it into the far corner.

Riyad Mahrez brought the champions level just two minutes into the second half after a dubious penalty decision, but Robert Snodgrass made sure the three points were Hull’s with a powerful strike from inside the box on 55 minutes to start the season off with a massive shock.

The early leaders are Man United as Jose Mourinho’s first league game in the charge of the Red Devils got off to a perfect start with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth.

Juan Mata took advantage of Simon Francis effort to give United a 40th minute lead and captain Wayne Rooney doubled their lead just before the hour mark as he headed in from Anthony Martial”s scuffed shot.

Summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic made sure of the victory on 64 minutes as he rifled home a low strike from 25 yards. Adam Smith got a 69th minute consolation for the Cherries with a left-footed strike as United top the pile after the opening round of games.

The game of the weekend came at the Emirates Stadium as Liverpool edged out Arsenal in a seven goal thriller as Jurgen Klopp’s men got off to a winning start.

Theo Walcott made up for his missed penalty with a 31st minute opener but Philippe Coutinho brought the away side level just before half-time with a brilliant free-kick.

Adam Lallana fired past Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech as he got on the end of a Girorgino Wijnaldum pass to put Liverpool into the lead four minutes into the second half before Coutinho bagged his second of the game with a close range finish to make it 3-1.

A brilliant solo effort from summer signing Saido Mane gave Liverpool a three goal cushion on 63 minutes and while Arsenal fired back with Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain’s deflected strike and a Callum Chambers header to make it 4-3, the Reds hung on for all three points.

It was also a winning start for title favourites Man City but it wasn’t all easy for Pep Guardiola’s men as a Paddy McNair own goal on 87 minutes saw Man City snatch all three points against David Moyes’ Black Cats.

There was also a late victory for Chelsea in Antonio Conte’s first league game in charge as Diego Costa fired home a 20-yard shot to hand the Blues an opening 2-1 win over London rivals West Ham.
