Rio Olympics Day 12: Jamaica’s Thompson wins 2nd gold in 200m, Brazil thrash Honduras

It was a second gold medal for Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson as she added 200m gold to her 100m title, while hosts Brazil are into the men’s soccer final with a convincing 6-0 win over Honduras.

Starting with Athletics and it was gold once again for Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson as she followed up her gold medal in the 100m with victory in the 200m to win her second gold of the games.

The 24-year-old clocked 21:78 seconds to beat Netherlands’ world champion Dafne Schippers by 0.13 seconds. USA’s Tori Bowie took bronze with a time of 22:15 seconds.

It was a USA clean weep in the Women’s 100m hurdles as Brianna Rollins took home the gold medal in a time of 12.48 seconds, 0.11 seconds faster than silver medallist Nia Ali. Kristi Castlin held off Great Britain’s Cindy Ofili to win bronze in 12.61, 0.02 seconds ahead of Ofili.

It was also an American one-two in the Women’s Long Jump as Tianna Bartoletta upset defending champion Brittney Reese to win the gold medal with a jump of 7.17m, her personal best.

Reese could only manager 7.15m with her final attempt to claim the silver medal, while Serbia’s Ivana Spanovic jumped a national record of 7.08m to win bronze.

Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto cruised to victory in the Men’s 3000m steeplechase and set a new Olympic record of 8:03.28  on his way to the gold medal. USA’s Evan Jager took silver a second behind Kipruto, while Kenya’s defending champion Ezekiel Kemboi won bronze on 8:08.47.

It was heartbreak for Brazil’s Barbara Seixas and Agatha Bednarczuk in the final of the Women’s Beach Volleyball as German pair Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst denied the hosts a fourth gold medal with a 21-18 21-14 victory to win gold on Copacabana Beach.

China completed their sweep of Table Tennis gold medals at the Rio Olympics as Ma Long, Zhang Jike and Xu Xin saw off the tough challenge of Japan to win the Men’s team final 3-1. Germany beat South Korea to win the bronze medal.

It was also gold to China in the Men’s 58kg Taekwondo as Shaui Zhao beat Thailand’s Tawin Hanprab 6-4 in the final to win yet another Chinese gold at the Rio Olympics.

South Korea’s Kim So-hui won gold in the Women’s Taekwondo 49kg category as she defeated Tijana Bogdanovic of Serbia 7-6 to win South Korea’s seventh gold in Rio.

Indonesian pair Tontowi Ahmed and Liliyana Natsir struck gold in the Mixed Doubles Badminton final as they beat Malaysia’s Chang Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in straight sets to win gold. China’s Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei beat compatriots Ma Jin and Xu Chen to win bronze.

It was gold to France in the Equestrian Team Jumping event as they finished on top with just three penalties, as they bagged a first gold medal in the event in 40 years. USA bagged the silver medal on five penalties and Germany on eight penalties was enough to win bronze.

Daniyar Yelevssinov became the fourth Kazakstan boxer to win gold in the Welterweight Boxing division at the Olympic games as he dominated Shakram Giyasov to win on a unanimous decision and bag his country’s third gold in Rio.

In Wrestling, Japan’s Kaori Icho retained her Olympic gold medal for the fourth consecutive games as the 32-year-old beat Russia’s Valeria Koblova 3-1 to claim victory in the 58kg freestyle category.

It was also a Japanese gold medal in the 48kg freestyle division as Eri Tosaka beat Azerbaijan’s Mariya Stadnik 3-1, while Sara Dosho made it hat-trick of Japan golds with a 3-1 win over Russia’s Natalia Vorobieva  in the 69kg freestyle.
