The Week in Sport (31 Oct – 6 Nov)

Over the past seven days we witnessed Ireland’s rugby team record a famous victory over New Zealand, Andy Murray became world number one and much more in this week’s recap of The Week in Sport.


Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League with a 6-1 win over Watford, Eden Hazard scored twice in the Chelsea’s 5-0 thrashing of Everton and a late Middlesbrough equaliser saw them snatch a point from Man City. More week 11 results here.

Kevin De Bruyne was on the score sheet in Man City’s win over Barcelona

Man City gained revenge over Barcelona in the Champions League as they secured a 3-1 win over the Spanish giants, while Arsenal had to come from 2-0 down to beat Ludogorets Razgrad 3-2.

Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG and Borussia Dortmund secure their place in the last 16, but Real Madrid have to wait after being held to a 3-3 draw by Legia Warsaw. More UCL results here.

Man United’s Europa League hopes suffered a blow with a 2-1 defeat at Fenerbache, Southampton recorded a famous 2-1 win at Inter Milan, while Irish champions Dundalk put up a brave fight in their 2-1 loss at Zenit St Petersburg. More UEL results here.

Real Madrid remain top of La Liga after Gareth Bale scored a brace in a 3-0 win over Leganes, while Barcelona remain in touching distance thanks to Luis Suarez’s winner in a 2-1 victory at Sevilla.

Miralem Pjanic’s superb free kick gave Juventus a 2-1 win at Chievo to keep hold of top spot in Serie A, while Leipzig took advantage of Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim as they defeated Mainz 3-1 to move joint top of the Bundesliga.

Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed a new five-year deal with Real Madrid which will see him extend his stay in the Spanish capital until 2021, while Inter Milan have sacked manager Frank De Boer after less than three months in the job,

In other news, former Germany striker Miroslav Klose has announced his retirement from football and will take up a coaching role with the national side, while Liverpool’s Danny Ings will miss the rest of the season due to another knee injury.

American Football

Dallas Cowboys maintained their 100% start to the season as Dak Prescott inspired them to a 35-10 win against the winless Cleveland Browns, while Eli Manning threw for four touchdowns in the New York Giants 28-23 win over Philadelphia Eagles.

Last year’s beaten Superbowl finalists Carolina Panthers won back-to-back games for the first time this season edging to a 13-10 win against Los Angeles Rams, while Green Bay Packers fell to a 31-26 defeat to Indianapolis Colts.

Andy Murray has become world number one for the first time in his career after the Scot won the Paris Masters for the first time with a hard-fought 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 win over American John Isner, as Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat to Marin Cilic in the quarter finals.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova overcame a slow start to beat Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-4 6-2 to win the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China.


Chicago Cubs ended their 108 year wait for a World Series as they defeated Cleveland Indians after a thrilling win in game seven to secure an 8-7 victory to become Major League Baseball Champions.
