Andy Murray capped off an incredible 2016 by winning the ATP World Tour Finals as the Scot saw off second seed Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-4 to ensure he finishes the year as world number one.

It was not an easy route to the title for Murray, after he overcame a marathon semi-final against Raonic to book his spot in the final after coming from a set down to edge out the sixth seed on a tie-breaker 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (11-9).

Novak Djokovic also headed into the final unbeaten as he thrashed Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-1 in the final four before coming up short in his quest for a sixth ATP World Tour title.

Golf

Jordan Spieth secured his second Australian Open title after the American won a three-way play-off against Australians Cameron Smith and Ashley Hall after all men finished on 12 under at Royal Sydney.

Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick secured victory at the DP World Tour Championship with a closing 67 to finish 16 under, one clear of runner-up and compatriot Tyrell Hatton in Dubai, as Open champion Henrik Stenson clinched a second Race to Dubai title in four years.

Horse Racing

Cue Card won the Betfair Chase for the third time in four years as Colin Tizzard’s veteran lived up to his favourite tag to hold off a brave challenge from Conerygree at Haydock.

American Football

It was a record ninth straight win for Dallas Cowboys as Dak Prescott led them to a 27-17 victory over Baltimore Ravens, while it was a fifth win on the bounce for New York Giants as Eli Manning’s two touchdowns saw them record a 22-16 win over Chicago Bears.

Tom Brady threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns in New England Patriots 30-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers, while Minnesota Vikings ended a four game losing streak with a 30-24 win over Arizona Cardinals.

Mark King won his first ranking title in 25 years as Englishman defeated compatriot Barry Hawkins 9-8 to win the Northern Ireland Open.

Darts

World number one Michael van Gerwen successfully retained his Grand Slam of Darts crown as the Dutchman saw off Englishman James Wade 16-8 in the final.
