16-time world champion John Cena teams with girlfriend Nikki Bella to take on the husband and wife duo of The Miz and Maryse in a battle of the real-life couples at WrestleMania 33.
It won’t be the first time Cena and the Awesome One have met at WrestleMania having clashed in the main event of WrestleMania XXVII, but this time around they will have their leading ladies by their side.
Nikki Bella made a successful return to the WWE from neck injury last summer, but the former Divas Champion’s comeback did not sit too well with fellow Smackdown superstar Carmella.
The two women would go to war for months until Nikki Bella finally got rid of the thorn in her side in a No DQ match at TLC. However, Carmella would have one last dig at Nikki, when she forced Natalya to admit she was the one who attacked Nikki at Survivor Series.
Nikki then had a score to settle with the Queen of Harts, but they could not sort out their differences when they met at Elimination Chamber forcing a double countout. A further altercation backstage saw Maryse get caught in the middle of it.
The Fabulous One and Natalya would finally bring their fued to an end on the 21 February episode of Smackdown and despite Natalya picking up the victory, she owed a massive thank you to Maryse, who assaulted Nikki with a steel pipe.
Meanwhile, things between The Miz and Cena began to erupt that same night when The Miz reacted angrily to being eliminated by Cena in a No. 1 Contenders Battle Royal and got back into the ring to cost the 16-time world champion his chance of headlining WrestleMania.
Seven days later, Cena was a guest on MizTV and Miz bashed Cena for being a hypocrite for going to Hollywood, after Cena berated The Rock a few years ago when Rocky left WWE for movie fame.
The Miz does not want to be just “the other guy” but he claimed Cena did not allow him to be the guy, because he manipulated his way to the top of the WWE and believes he did it out of jealousy for The Miz.
Cena hit back by saying if he did manipulate his way to the top, he would be standing face-to-face with The Undertaker rather than being stuck in the ring with The Miz, claiming the Awesome One is a nobody.
Maryse stuck up for her husband and slapped Cena for disrespecting The Miz, but when Nikki came to the ring to stick up for her man, The Miz and Maryse made a quick escape.
Cena and Nikki would team together for the first time to make quick work of James Ellsworth and Carmella in early March, but the couple would then be assaulted by Miz and Maryse after their victory.
The Miz and Maryse told fans their relationship is true love and believe Cena and Nikki’s relationship is a big lie, claiming that real boyfriend’s don’t make people sign a contract to be their girlfriend.
Miz promised a very special MizTV for the 14 March edition of Smackdown and when Maryse claimed Nikki is jealous of her because she has a ring and she does not, Miz said she will never get what she wants because Cena only loves himself.
Maryse also claimed that her so-called friend Nikki got her removed from being part of the very first series of Total Divas and labelled her a “lying, backstabbing bitch.”
When Cena and Nikki stormed towards the ring, Nikki told her they were never friends, claiming Maryse was the one to stab her and her sister Brie in the back and issued a challenge to Maryse to sort out their differences.
The Miz said she does not decide the matches, but Smackdown general manager Daniel Bryan is the one who does and he made Miz and Maryse versus Cena and Nikki official for WrestleMania.
Cena and Nikki showed they are up for the challenge as Cena made quick work of Fandango the next week on Smackdown, while Nikki took out ‘Breezy Bella’, who was Tyler Breeze dressed as Nikki.
Speaking of disguises, Miz and Maryse presented us a very special lost episode of Total Bellas, as they mocked their WrestleMania opponents with their spoof take on the reality show.
Cena and Nikki admitted is was a good joke, but claimed that the husband and wife duo are jealous of their relationship. Cena believes that all they do is run their mouth and won’t be able to back up their words in the ring.
Cena is confident that Nikki and himself will destroy the the former Intercontinental Champion and Maryse at WrestleMania and a tense staredown between the couples five days before WrestleMania, lead to Miz and Maryse backing away from Nikki and the leader of the Cenation.
When I first heard of this idea for Cena to team with Nikki to challenge The Miz and Maryse, I thought it was one of the worst ideas they could have come up with for WrestleMania.
However, it has been a very good build-up to the mixed tag team match, even if it has been Miz and Maryse who has been carrying the rivalry with their amazing promos and funny spoofs of Cena and Nikki’s relationship on Total Bellas.
While the build-up has definitely been entertaining, I don’t expect this match to be a contender for match of the night. It will be interesting to see how Maryse fares in her first match in six years, but I expect that The Miz and Cena will do most of the work.
The Miz and Maryse have carried this rivalry in the past few weeks and while I would love to see them win, I believe there is only one way this is ending and that is a win for Cena and Nikki.
Rumours have it that Cena could pop the question to his girlfriend after the match, but I am hoping that does not happen because a wrestling ring is not the place for a genuine marriage proposal.
Winner: John Cena and Nikki Bella
