The Week in Sport (3-9 Apr)

Sergio Garcia finally won his first major title at the US Masters and One for Arthur claiming victory at the Grand National are just some of the highlights in this edition of The Week in Sport.


In midweek Premier League action, Chelsea got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Man City, while Hull moved out of the relegation zone with a 4-2 win over Middlesbrough. More week 31 results here.

Marcos Alonso’s free kick helped Chelsea see off Bournemouth

In the weekend’s action, Liverpool came from behind to continue their quest for Champions League football with a 2-1 win over Stoke, while Chelsea edged closer to the title with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth. More week 32 results here.

Alvaro Morata scored a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 4-2 win over Leganes in midweek La Liga action, while Barcelona kept the pressure on the leaders as Lionel Messi scored twice in a 3-0 win over ten-man Sevilla.

In the weekend’s action, a late Antoine Griezmann equaliser rescued a point for Atletico in a 1-1 draw against rivals Real Madrid, but Barcelona failed to take advantage of Real’s slip up after Neymar was sent off in a 2-0 defeat by Malaga.

Bayern Munich’s 20 match unbeaten run came to an end after a shock 1-0 loss to Hoffenheim, but they bounce back to edge closer to the Bundesliga title as Robert Lewandowski scored twice in a 4-1 thrashing of rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice as Juventus made it 32 consecutive home wins with a 2-0 win over Chievo to edge closer to a sixth straight Serie A title. Roma kept up their title push with a 3-0 over Bologna and Napoli beat Lazio 3-0 to move closer to sealing a Champions League spot.

Lazio reached the Coppa Italia final as their first leg advantage saw them through despite a 3-2 defeat to Roma, while Juventus also booked their spot in the final despite a 3-2 defeat to Napoli, thanks to a 3-1 win in the first leg.

In Ligue 1, Radamel Falcao scored the only goal in Monaco’s 1-0 win over Angers, while Edinson Cavani scored twice as PSG thrashed Guingamp 4-0 to stay within three points off the leaders.

In other news, Jesse Lingard has signed a new four-year contract at Man United worth £100,000 a week, while Liverpool winger Sadio Mane will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.


Great Britain are out of the Davis Cup after a 3-0 quarter-final defeat by France, as Nicolas Mahut and Julien Benneteau sealed a 7-6 (9-7) 5-7 7-5 7-5 win over Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot in the doubles.

Australia booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-2 win over USA as Nick Kyrgios beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 6-4 and will face Belgium in the semis, after David Goffin saw off Paolo Lorenzi 6-3 6-3 6-2 to help Belgium beat Italy 3-2.

Serbia beat Spain to set up a meeting with France after Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki sealed victory with a 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-0 4-6 6-2 victory over Pablo Carreno Busta and Marc Lopez in doubles action.

Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova stunned world number one Angelique Kerber to win the Monterrey Open title, as the world number 16 saw off the German 6-4 2-6 6-1 to seal her fourth title in Mexico.

Sergio Garcia finally clinched major title as the 37-year-old defeated Justin Rose in a play-off, after both men carded a closing round 69 to finish nine under par to win the US Masters in Augusta.

World number one Dustin Johnson pulled out of the Masters after the favourite injured his lower back in a fall at his rental home on the eve of the tournament.
