It is time for yet another recap of The Week in Sport, with this week’s highlights including Roger Federer winning a record eighth Wimbledon title and Lewis Hamilton clinched a fifth win at the British Grand Prix.


Roger Federer won a record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title, as the third seed proved too strong for Marin Cilic in the final to win his first title at SW19 since 2012.

Roger Federer won an eighth Wimbledon title without dropping a set

Federer won his 19th grand slam title having not dropped a set the entire tournament including a dominant semi-final victory over Thomas Berdych. Marin Cilic reached his first Wimbledon final after beating Andy Murray’s conqueror Sam Querrey in four sets.

Garbine Muguruza won her first Wimbledon title, as the Spaniard proved too strong for five-time winner Venus Williams 7-5 6-0 to clinch her second grand slam title.

Muguruza cruised into a second Wimbledon final with a comfortable win over Magdalena Rybarikova, while she also ended the hopes of top seed Angelique Kerber in the last 16.

Venus Williams reached a ninth Wimbledon final after proving too strong for the sixth seed Johanna Konta, who knocked out Simona Halep in the previous round to become the first British female to reach the final four at SW19 in 39 years.

Other highlights of the week included Rafael Nadal suffering a shock exit to Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller in a near five-hour classic in the last 16, while Novak Djokovic pulled out injured in his quarter-final against 11th seed Berdych.

Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Brazilian Marcelo Melo edged Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 13-11 to win an epic Wimbledon men’s doubles final in four and a half hours.

It was a much more comfortable route to the title for Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the women’s doubles final as they thrashed Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-ching and Romania’s Monica Niculescu 6-0 6-0.

Top seeds Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis beat defending champions Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen 6-4 6-4 to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles final.


In transfer news, Man United wrapped up a £75m deal to bring Everton striker Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford, while they have also announced Michael Carrick as the new captain after Wayne Rooney’s departure to Everton.

Man City have wrapped up an initial £45m transfer for Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker, after Guardiola missed out on signing Dani Alves, who moved to PSG on a free transfer.

Chelsea completed their second major signing of the summer by signing Monaco midfielder Tiemue Bakayoko in a £40m move. More Premier League transfer deals here.

Romelu Lukaku will wear the number 9 jersey at Man United

Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez has moved to Bayern Munich on a two-year loan deal, while Barcelona have added Benfica defender Nelson Semedo in a €30m move.

Leonardo Bonucci could be set to complete a sensational move from Juventus to rivals AC Milan, while goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has performed a u-turn at the Italian club by signing a new four-year deal.

Scottish champions Celtic began their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Linfield in the second qualifying round, while there were also first leg wins for Red Bull Slazburg, Legia Warsaw and FC Copenhagen. More results here.

In pre-season friendlies, Marcus Rashford scored twice as Man United thumped LA Galaxy 5-2, Alexandre Lacazette scored on his Arsenal debut in a 2-0 win over Syndey FC and Liverpool drew 1-1 with Wigan. More results here.
